My name is Benjamin. I come from the UK (although I was born in New Zealand) and I have been described as having a ginger personality. Whatever that means. I assume they're referring to my hair and my Ronald Weasley nature. Aside from that, I'm the only male blogger worth knowing.

You can thank Amber for that lovely introduction, but you deserve much more than just a small paragraph showing my nutty nature, therefore if you do wish to find out more, please visit the

Car Insurance Fiasco

Why does having a car have to be so hard? After failing my driving test first time, to then having my first car written off in an accident (my dad was driving), then having to wait for a replacement and then to having another accident (which thankfully has turned out to not be my fault), and now my car insurance. Now that just makes me sound like a spoilt brat who wants everything now, which I am to an extent, but it really has been one thing after another.

With being a young boy, car insurance is extremely high, and now the one loop that everybody my age had discovered that reduces the premium by quite a lot, has been blocked by all the car insurance companies my family and I can think of. This ‘loop’ was simply being put as a second or named driver on my parents insurance policy until when I turn 18, car insurance premium goes down by about £300 and I can afford my own policy. Just my luck that my insurance policy runs out 4 weeks before my 18th, and all the insurance companies have changed their policies so not to let young drivers be put as 2nd or named drivers - first problem.

Therefore, to be able to drive again, I wold need to have my own insurance policy, which isn’t totally a bad thing, it would just mean that I can start getting no-claims bonuses a year earlier than planned. I had the idea then to go through Tescos Insurance and use my staff benefits to be able to make monthly payments at 0% interest and get 15% discount. Wrong - because I am under the age of 18 it would be illegal for any insurance company to go into a credit agreement with me. Sucks huh?

So either I pay £2000 upfront for a year’s car insurance (and that is the absolute lowest we could find; the most expensive being £6500) or I wait until my 18th birthday which may only be 4 weeks away, but it is just frustrating not being able to drive.

Bah. *gets dusty bike out of the garage*

My insurance is with Zurich. £549 for a year fully comp, and I was 20 when it renewed.

It will go down with age, trust me. 47% of 17-year-olds make a claim on their insurance. 11% of 25-year-olds make a claim. That’s why “25″ is the magic age for cheaper car insurance.

Just tried Zurich:

Total annual premium £ 2969.93

See? :P

Bikes FTW! Exercise is good for you, and for climate change! :P Al Gore would be proud of you! :P
(I cycle to school everyday, you don’t see me complaining about my car do you? xD Well, I’m not allowed, but still..)

I find driving to be scary; I don’t trust myself to control a vehicle. As Emsz said, bikes, FTW!

Waiting 4 weeks is probably better :3 It’s only 4 weeks in the grand scheme of life!

I love riding my bicycle! It’s good for the environment :D. Of course I have not exactly driven a car before but at least you are not subjected to taking public transportation…

It really is sad how insurance companies boost up the prices for young drivers; especially since they did a study in my city and found that people in the 30s age group was most frequently in car crashes!
